The late Bro Gan Ewe Beng (Founder of NED)
It all started in the early 1980s....
Bro Gan Ewe Beng and Dato Jega Jagadeesan were very close friends, and they used to meet each other every week. With the constant encouragement by Dato Jega, Bro Gan and his friends organized the first ever Sai Bhajan in Penang. It was held at the Lee Association in Burmah Road. Attendance was estimated around 700 participants.
Following the good response, the group continued to conduct monthly house bhajans amongst family and friends. In 1993, they found a permanent location at the Shiva Shakthi temple located in Mount Erskine Road. The temple was subsequently demolished for reconstruction in 1997.
This led to a search for a new building and with the help and determined efforts of several Sai members, Bro Gan managed to raise the funds needed to purchase a shoplot in Desa Intan, Farlim. The completed building was officially opened on 28 December 1997.
