Mid Autumn Festival

On this auspicious day (24th September or the 15th day of the 8th moon of the Chinese lunar calendar), we held prayers at the Centre in the evening, beginning with Omkar followed by chanting of the Sai Gayatri  and meditation. After prayers, we all got together to enjoy tea, homemade mooncakes and other light snacks. In Chinese culture this festival is an occasion for reunion with family and friends and mooncakes symbolize completeness and togetherness.

In conjunction with the Mid Autumn Festival, we brought mooncakes and lanterns to celebrate with the inmates of the Gan En Zhi Jia on Saturday, 22nd September.  We helped to decorate the place with colourful lanterns and took photos with the old folks who were very eager to pose for them, each carrying a piece of mooncake and a lantern!  May Swami bless them all!

Love All, Serve All

We were very happy to be of service to Mdm. Tan last Saturday.  Mdm. Tan is a 83-year old widow who lives alone.  She walks with the aid of a walker and her vision is impaired due to old age. A member of our haircutting team gave her a badly needed haircut and later we all sat and chatted with her for some time, listening to the stories of her younger days.  Mdm. Tan was very happy and we shall be visiting her for regular haircuts and companionship in the future.

Home Visit

We visited Mdm. Leng in her flat last Sunday evening after our Centre prayers.  Mdm. Leng is an elderly devotee who lives on the 12th floor above our Centre.  She walks with the aid of a walker and despite her handicap, she never fails to attend our prayers every Sunday.  Unfortunately she recently suffered a fall and has been unable to walk since then. We presented her with a gift hamper and sincerely hope she will recover soon and come back to our Centre for prayers.

Free English Tuition (Class 3)

This Sunday, 13 students attended class.  In conjunction with the coming Mid Autumn Festival, we distributed chocolate wafers, mooncake and a packet of Milo contributed by fellow Centre members to all the students after class.  From next week onwards, classes will be extended by half an hour i.e. 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. to give more time for the students to learn.

Monthly Haircutting

Our voluntary  haircutters were busy once again on Sunday, 9th September cutting and shaving at the Home of the Infirmed and Aged.  This is a monthly activity and they serve 30-40 residents of the Home on each visit.  We were also recently joined by two hairstylists who wish to help out.

Free English Tuition (Class 2)

Our second free English tuition class was held on Sunday, 9th September.  15 students attended.  We find the response from the Farlim residents quite encouraging and are happy to be able to do this service every Sunday.  Cheers to our voluntary teachers who have taken time off their personal schedule to teach these young children!

Food cooked with love for the residents

This week's vegetarian dinner on Saturday, 8th September for the residents of Gan En Zhi Jia had two special dishes - fried spring rolls and herbal soup with lentil and corn.  The herbal soup is very nutritious and good for the old folks.  We also cut up their food in small pieces so that they can bite easily.  Pictures show the residents enjoying their meal. Aunty Jeewa is the latest addition to the home.
