Sai Spiritual Showers - Issue 3/58

EXPERIENCING HIS PRESENCE

In El Salvador we celebrate Jesus Christ's birth on 24 December. It is a very special day and preparations for dinner are made in advance and the whole family and very close friends get together. We all go to mass at midnight. My family is a typical Latin American family and we all go for dinner at my parents' house.
The phone rang at 6.30 a.m. It was my mother telling me that my father was not feeling well that morning and she wanted me to go over to their home. Before I reached their place, my brother had already taken my father to the hospital. I picked up a few things I might need and went to the hospital. My father was feeling very very bad. He couldn't breathe easily even with an oxygen mask. He was then taken to the Intensive Care Unit. At that moment when I looked at my father's face, his condition seemed desperate. I called Baba from the very bottom of my heart and I saw my father waving us "goodbye." The Intensive Care Unit at the hospital is located on the fifth floor and nobody is allowed to go there except people that have someone very ill. The elevator opens to a small waiting room, where I decided to sit with my son, Juan Carlos, who had just arrived. All of a sudden, the elevator door opened and a Hindu lady wearing a light blue sari came out. My son and I looked at each other and said, "Baba is coming to give us company." We felt so good.
I want to explain that in El Salvador no one wears a sari. It is very rare to see a woman wearing a sari. We were so surprised to see the Hindu lady. She had red roses in her hands. She came directly to me and asked: "Are you very much worried?" "Yes,” I said. "Is it your husband who is ill?" she asked me. "No,” I said, "It is my father." She said, "I am very sorry" and embraced me. She sat by my side and we talked. I told her how much I loved India and how much I loved Baba. She said, "I have my home in India and in America."
I felt so good talking to that lady. Minutes later my father's doctor came out and called me and said, "Connie, I am very sorry. I did what I could; your father has left us."
My father died in two hours with very little suffering and when I heard the doctor telling me of his passing, I felt my pain had been lessened in a very subtle way, because there is nothing that absorbs my attention more than thinking and talking about Sai Baba and about India. That lady in the blue sari was the instrument to make me think about the crucial moments my father was going through.
Our gathering on that December 24th was very different from the meetings in other years. In the streets thousands of fireworks were being burnt. It became a very auspicious night. I felt the gates of Heaven were being opened to welcome my father's return to his Source. My father was not Baba's devotee but I am sure Baba wanted me to know that He was there to console me.

Sai Spiritual Showers - Issue 3/57

When the incident I am relating occurred, I was a student of the 10th class. I was suffering from constant stomachache for about a year; I used to vomit blood five to seven times a day. In spite of such a bad condition, I attended all the Bhajans arranged by Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samiti, Dharamsala (H P.) regularly. I was also a student of the Bal Vikas at that time.
One day at school the mathematics class was going on. I felt like vomiting and asked for permission to go out. When I came back, my teacher stared at me and said: "You are a devotee of Sri Sathya Sai Baba; why does not He cure you with His Divine ash (Vibhuti)?"
These words of the teacher hurt me very much. I came back home with a heavy heart. I decided not to take any medicine but only "Vibhuti.” Even then my condition was not improving. This was a great test for me.
It was the month of July. My school was closed for two months. My mother decided to take me to the Post Graduate Institute at Chandigarh for treatment, as my condition was getting worse day by day.
It was a Monday, near about 2 P. M. I was lying on my bed and reading the book, "Sathyam, Sivam, Sundaram." There was a passage in it where Swami says: "I dwell in the hearts of My devotees." I thought, "What Swami said here is not true in my case. Swami is not in my heart. If Swami is in my heart, why don't I feel His presence?" Thinking about all this I fell asleep. Then Sai Baba of Shirdi appeared in my vision and from the other side Sri Sathya Sai Baba appeared and then both merged with each other and after that there was only our beloved Swami. An enchanting smile was playing on His lips. He said, "Jivatma! Awake! Arise! See Who is before you!" I replied with great joy, "Swami, Bhagawan Himself is standing before me.” Swami became serious and said, "Recognise Me and give Me a place in your heart.” I answered, "Swami. I don't have the capability to keep such a great soul in my heart." Swami said, "Keep Me always in your heart.”
After that, I changed the topic and asked "Swami, I have great anger in me. You say that anger is a vice. In my anger I feel like destroying everything that comes before me, but anyhow I control myself.” At this Swami laughed and said, "Even then this doesn't help you." I requested, "Please advise me about the way I can control myself.” Swami answered, "When your temper rises, drink some cold water, take a walk around the garden or lie down on your bed.” I asked Bhagawan "We call You so much, but even then you don't come. How should we call You?"
Swami replied with a smile: "I am with you every moment; you yourself cannot feel My presence.” He continued: "Whenever you get the opportunity to serve anyone, serve him well. While serving, don't think of what you will get in return. You attend all Bhajans and Bal Vikas regularly; it makes Me feel very happy, but don't think when you come to Puttaparthi Swami will reward you. Do Seva without thinking of its reward.” Then Bhagawan said, "Swami is in your heart and wants you to get cured.”
And true to His words, Swami cured me and the roots of that illness have completely disappeared. I don't know in what words I can thank Bhagawan. I can only ask for His blessings and pray to Him to show me the path of goodness.

Sai Spiritual Showers - Issue 3/56

i had briefly mentioned in the Sanathana Sarathi, one of the earlier issues, that about 50 people had made a trip to come with me to India, into the physical Presence of Bhagawan. Bhagawan's Leela! Some of them had already experienced His Grace, even before they met Him. Lila Young, for example, was determined to see Him and had ready her passport, visa, and vaccination certificates. The only missing item was money! How could she travel? But, she felt sure that Bhagawan would answer her ardent prayers. And so it happened!
Later, when Bhagawan called the group into the Interview Room, that could hardly hold so many people, while talking kindly to us, He produced suddenly, by that quick wave of His Hand a crystal japmala, and without a word, He threw it round Lila's neck!
A few days before we were scheduled to depart, a neighbour offered her 2000 dollars, without being asked for it! For, her husband, an inventor, suddenly received a fine offer for one of his inventions, some luck that didn't happen in the last ten years. "We did not have even five dollars in the house," Lila told us, when relating this Leela, with tears in her eyes.
While hearing this story, i was reminded of one of my own experiences.
In 1969 i had not planned to go for Baba's Birthday as I was due to visit India a little later. All the same one evening, after meditation, looking at His picture, I found myself saying: 'Bhagawan, take me to Puttaparthi for Your Birthday.' Two days later, I received a phone call from Chuck Wein, a young man who used to come to our Sai Baba Centre in Los Angeles. He was calling from the Warner Brothers Motion Picture Studio.
'Mataji, can you go to India tomorrow? Warner Brothers will pay your passage if you will go to ask Sai Baba's permission to make a documentary film on His life...' Somehow, I wasn't even surprised and answered very calmly, 'Tomorrow is Sunday and all the offices are closed, but I can leave on Tuesday.'
'Who is paying for my ticket?' I asked the Air India manager in Los Angeles.
'Warner Brothers,' he replied.
I arrived just in time for the celebrations which began early in the morning when Bhagawan hoisted the Prasanthi flag on the roof of the temple. He then declared that He was Shiva-Shakti incarnated in human form, in order to lead men towards God. He exhorted people to cleanse and purify their hearts - to make Discrimination (Viveka) their flagpost, unfurl the flag of Love on it and let it flutter joyfully in the wind of Grace. He also said that He is born in each of us as Love.
'Only that day, when love is born in you, can it be My Birthday.'
At eleven o'clock Swami went from the temple to the auditorium in a procession. The ceremony began with Mother Easwaramma first garlanding Bhagawan, then anointing Him, on His head, with a flower dipped into a cup of fragrant oil. She was followed by several others chosen by Bhagawan rom among His old devotees. The procession then moved, headed by the temple elephant Sai Gita.
The day before I was ready to return home, Bhagawan called me in to give His blessing. At parting He produced, with the familiar circling motion of His hand, a beautiful golden medallion of the Goddess Lakshmi.
'I don't want anything, Bhagawan,' I pleaded.
'This is not for you... for the protection of the house - no more fires.'
I did not know at that moment how badly we would need His protection a few months later when we were about to lose the ranch.
After returning from India, I went to the Warner Brothers Studio, but not a single soul there had ever heard of Sai Baba, let alone my trip to Him!
'Another leela of Baba?' wondered Dick Bock when I told him about it.
